Gaakukorpe community in the Volta region benefits from solar energy project
The French Embassy in Ghana is funding a solar energy provision project which was initiated by the Volta region-based association, Village Exchange Ghana (VEG).
A visit was paid to the project by the Cooperation Attaché and the Project Coordinator of the Department of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs at the French Embassy in Ghana to see its progress.
The installation of solar panels on the roofs of the houses was carried out by students of the Lady Volta Vocational Training Centre in electricity and solar power (LVTC), which was established by the VEG in partnership with Social Venture Africa, another NGO.
Every year the centre trains about 20 people, mainly women, in solar energy. This contributes to tackling the two-fold challenge of lack of electricity in the rural areas, as well as gender empowerment.
The project, financed by the French Solidarity Project Fund of the Embassy, is being implemented in Gaakukorpe, a village of 40 inhabitants, situated in the southern part of Ho, in the Adaklu district.
Beyond the supply of electricity, it seeks to promote renewable energy sources, generate jobs and income in the solar energy sector and also help the population to adapt to the effects of climate change.
