Ghana & France Explore New Frontiers in Sports Collaboration

Ghana and France have taken steps to broaden their cooperation in sports development, with both countries exploring new areas of partnership. This development came to light during a high-level engagement at the Ministry for Sports and Recreation, where the Sector Minister, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, hosted the French Ambassador to Ghana,Her Excellency (H.E.), Diarra Dimé-Labille.
The engagement centered on broadening the scope of the existing partnership, with discussions covering athlete development, technical and coaching capacity enhancement, grassroots sports promotion, modern sports infrastructure, and high-performance systems. Hon. Adams commended France for its sustained support to Ghana’s sports sector and noted government’s resolve to tap into French expertise, especially that of the prestigious National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance (INSEP), to open up greater opportunities for Ghanaian athletes, coaches, and technical officials.
At the heart of the discussions was President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to revive school and grassroots sports. The vision seeks to build a robust pathway for talent identification and development, while positioning sports as a tool for instilling discipline, teamwork, well-being, and critical life skills in young Ghanaians. The meeting also explored investment opportunities in modern, multi-purpose sports infrastructure through sustainable Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements. Such facilities are expected to cater to multiple sporting disciplines while doubling as venues for large-scale sporting, entertainment, and commercial events, thereby enhancing sports tourism and contributing to economic growth.
Another key issue on the table was the safety and welfare of young Ghanaian footballers pursuing opportunities abroad. The two sides explored closer collaboration with relevant institutions, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to promote safe and regular migration pathways and protect athletes from exploitation and irregular migration.
The meeting also considered emerging opportunities in esports and digital sports, with both parties discussing enhanced cooperation between French institutions and Ghanaian sports federations to harness the potential of the fast-growing global industry.
H.E. Dimé-Labille reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Ghana, underscoring the role of sports as a vehicle for development and international cooperation.
In response, Hon. Adams reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to forging productive international partnerships that will translate Ghana’s rich sporting talent into concrete development outcomes and reinforce the country’s sports ecosystem.
In exploring these new avenues of partnership, Ghana and France share a common resolve to use sports to spur youth development, economic growth, and global solidarity.
